Mexican Leaders Urges Calmness After Death of CJNG Leader ‘El Mencho’

(MENAFN) Claudia Sheinbaum urged the public to remain calm on Sunday following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” emphasizing that there is "absolute coordination" with state governments across the country.

“There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm,” Sheinbaum wrote on X, adding that “activities are proceeding normally throughout most of the country.”

She acknowledged that the federal operation sparked unrest, citing reports from the Defense Ministry of road blockades and other disturbances following the Special Forces operation in Tapalpa, a known CJNG stronghold.

The ministry described the mission: "During this operation, Mexican military personnel were attacked, and in defense of their physical integrity, they repelled the aggression. This resulted in four members of the 'CJNG' criminal group dying at the scene and three others being severely wounded, who lost their lives during their airlift to Mexico City. Among the latter is Ruben 'N' (alias Mencho); however, the corresponding authorities will be in charge of the forensic activities to confirm his identification."

In addition to the fatalities, two cartel members were arrested, and authorities confiscated armored vehicles and various weapons, including rocket launchers capable of targeting aircraft.
The operation prompted violent reactions in multiple states, including road blockades, burning vehicles, and armed clashes. In response, Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a red alert and suspended in-person school classes on Monday.

Sheinbaum reiterated the government’s commitment: "We work every day for peace, security, justice, and the well-being of Mexico."
